Interestingly, standardization of branches of industry, production types or concepts for planning & control mainly depend on two characteristic features discussed in Section 4.4. Figure 4.5.0.1 spans a two-dimensional space with the coordinates facility layout from Figure 4.4.3.1 (features related to logistics and production resources), and product variety concept from Figure 4.4.2.1 (features related to user and product or product family). This two-dimensional space allows, for a specific product or product family, to position the volume of produced items ("things" or "stuff") in demand against the need for variety.
